Recently I was trading some unstrung magic bows in for cash at the Grand Exchange and I over heard a fellow member of the fine Runescape game speaking about getting a name change. I inquired as to what he meant exactly and he went on to explain that JaGex is considering implimenting a system which will allow for players to change their in-game-name. Now, we won’t be able to change the name we use to log in… but our character name will be able to be changed.

I am very interested to see how this will play out – considering that many of the popular names are either already taken/banned there may not be much room to move in terms of acquiring a new and unique name. However I am sure that somebody will find a way around this somehow.

Ever since September, 2007, when Jagex Created the Corporeal Beast, a level 785 monster, the contest’s been on to see who can successfully solo it. If you think you’re up for it, a successful solo should be posted as a video on a site. The player who successfully solos the “CB” will certainly go down in RuneScape History. If you want to make RS History, then this is for you. However, it will take uncanny skill, weapons, and intelligence to defeat the Beast solo. Many players speculate it is actually impossible to kill without a clan.

Remember, only videos of successful solos will make you a hero!

The Prayer Beast

They are one of the most lethal killers out there, the G Maul Prayer Beast.  Before the G Maul spec nerf, they were really lethal, but still they are pretty powerful, and are starting to make a come back.

Required Skills

• Str: 50
• Att: 50
• Def: 0
• Prayer: 31

Those are the minimums you will need to be a serious threat in PvP fighting.  Minimums to wield the G Maul are 50 att and str, keep def at zero to minimize your combat lvl, and prayer at 31 for Ultimate Str.

PK food and  Zammy Brews.  At the cost of <250 per dose, they offer the str and att bonus of Super pots at 1/10 the price, and prayer bonus.  They do have an HP and def penalty, but at 1 def, it doesn’t matter so gobble a fish to heal up after every shot.

Carry a rune scimmy.  Twice as fast, and hits higher than a maul.  Wound them, then pull out the maul and Quick Smash ‘em to death.

Turbo Tip:

It is easier to buy the materials for Zammy Brews and ask for an assist than it is to buy them.

When I started, I remember that I was stuck in Lumbridge. At that point I had no idea that it actually was Lumbridge, but that’s besides the point. I tried
asking people for help, I could get them to tell me where I was, but no one would actually take me out there. They would just ignore me, like they did to basically anyone. I thought it was just something normal for games. I later found out that it was pretty much an element of the game, arrogance. In order to be succesful you have to be arrogant, apperantly. You can’t be social, you have to use all the time you get, time is money! Can’t help other players, there’s no time for that, and what’s the point anyway, helping others? What do you get out of it?

It’s always been like that on RS, or at least it was like that when I started playing, and as far as I can tell it still is now. It’s hard to pinpoint for me, I don’t play anymore, but I’ve logged on a lower level account to see reactions of people when you just say hi, but in general you don’t get a reaction. It gets worse when you ask people for some help or just a general game question, such as where to get the kind of gloves they have, or what armor they have. Of course you can’t judge everyone of what a few people do and say, but I think you can still count a whole lot of the Runescape players to be arrogant, too. But why? It’s something which is hard to pinpoint.

At some point I thought the same way. I don’t know how it happened, I guess it’s something you get with higher levels? Arrogance. It comes with age for most people, but in my opinion, you see it in the “younger” people who don’t have a social life, and so they aren’t used to the normal world. To define younger, people in the age of 12-15. They are used to the internet, it’s safe there, you could easily threaten to kill someone, it’s safe. A bit of an extreme example, but the point is, you feel safer than you would in real life. So you can easily ignore and be rude to people, because there are no “real” consequences. No one cares if you do, and because you don’t see a real person, there’s no morale factor either, you’ll find insulting people an easier thing to do than in real life. It’s an isolated enviroment, which isn’t moderated by parents or guardians. You can say RS has player moderators, but they really don’t do that much. The warning system on RS is a joke, and even if you find yourself in the rare event of meeting a player mod, it’s higly unlikely that you’ll actually be doing something which is “reportable”. If you do get reported, there’s only a small chance they’ll look at the report, and if they do you might be unlucky and get a black mark or 2, but you can have so many that it’s safe to be a bully.

I think Runescape would be a much more enjoyable game if people would be nicer, Jagex should start with the introduction of in-game clans or guilds. This usually really boosts the social activity in a game, instead of those teamwork minigames. Jagex should realize that that just doesn’t work for their game, or at least, not yet. They should try making the game interesting for older people, the game being aimed at younger people doesn’t help for the social standard. Maybe if they see how nice it is to have friends and to help other people, be nice to them, they’ll do the same. Friends can help you when you need it, but some people just don’t see that everyone they meet is a potential friend. The next time someone ask you for help, try to realize, he or she is also a real person like you and me. He is also sitting behind a computer and playing the same game, of which you might have more knowledge. If people ask you directions in real life, you help them too, right, why not do it when you’re playing a game?

This question means different things to all of us. Over time RuneScape has evolved and the reason why we play the game could have fluctuated, maybe it was to pass time, maybe your just a little kid with nothing better to do, or maybe it was the pure fun factor of the game that had you coming back for more like that girl you know in school. Its different for all of us, but ill tell you guys about me.

I started playing RuneScape in December of 2004, and i was around 12 years old. I had alot of time. I wish i had that much now. Anyway, you know, tech was still evolving, its always evolving. I was just simply hooked on the game. I started off with a level 70 that my friend told me to cut wood for him. Little did i know he was using me to make cash, so i made up around 300k gold and one day i tried to login and i couldn’t! Well turns out my friend took the account back. But there is one thing i realized after that, i was good at making money. I knew how to work hard and achieve, and since there were no macro bot armies or anything back then well, legal gold making was easy!

So i got my best friend into playing it with me and we both made brand new characters. From there forth we would spend every waking moment we had on RuneScape. We made money the hard way, and quite frankly to be honest, we made alot of money the easy way. We designed scams and tricks for people to fall into, we got tons of santas, masks, and even a few phats. As time passed, playing the game didn’t just revolve around making money, but it went into pking, where we spent hours training pures. It went into main skilling, which i spent hours and hours questing/and obtaining my skills. I wanted to be the best since there was nothing else important.

…Or so i thought.. i started to get older and my school work started to slack. But by playing RuneScape so much, i kinda didn’t care. I put RuneScape in front of my work, my grades started to slack, and my parents started to get infuriated, especially since they are so strict about grades. My life started to rot. But of course, instead of fixing it, i just found “refuge” by playing RuneScape. It was like a drinking addiction, i just had to have more.. to fix things that i thought weren’t fixable, or better yet, i was too lazy to fix them.

My life rolled by and i started to finally realize that Runescape is killing my life. I quit, or maybe, im not sure what happend. It’s like one of those relationships that have no trouble but eventually, they just simply fade with no hurt. So around my 15th birthday, i put the game away. My logins became less frequent, and soon, i rarely even thought of it. But RuneScape had already taken its toll on my life, i became a geek. Maybe it wasn’t a bad thing. It taught me to be the young man i am today. I got into computer programming, learned alot of life lessons, and well, it made me grow as a person. Im not sure exactly how, but it did. I was one of the lucky ones i’d say. I was smart to begin with and RuneScape came out to be at least a bit beneficial to me.

….But this isn’t the case for everyone.

How do you know when your addicted?

I remember one of the funniest thing’s i still remember seeing in RuneScape was this quote by a couple of kids in Varrock East Bank. Excuse the profanity by the way.

“Omfg! My ****ing mom is telling me to go outside and play”, “I hate this *****”, “Ill be back later”

Still reminding myself of that moment just makes me crack up. It also tells you a lot about how young these kids actually are and what their saying. I mean honestly, you can see kindergarteners running around screaming “****”!!

Well, we all have our own idea of addiction to something but in my personal opinion, i would say, you devote most of your free time, and maybe even your work time into playing it. But as the above example shows, it could just generally be obvious.

How do i stop my addiction?

Ok your in for the lifetime classic, THROW AWAY YOUR ACCOUNT!

I’m serious about this one too. It does actually work, but it might just be a little hard. But heres a list of other ways i thought up on how to quit.

• Many of us have routers at home, and 95% of them provide website blocking. Ask your parents to block RuneScape.com and tell them seriously to never unlock it again. Unless at the rare chance that your parents play too, or you have another sibling, it will work.
• Go get your a$$ outside. Im not joking, don’t be lazy and end up like one of those fat kids you see stuck in their bed. Sure, it sounds harsh, but wouldn’t it be great if people stopped dying from heart attacks?
• Spend time with people. This can be very serious. Girlfriend, parents, friends, anyone! Go do things, goto the beach, hang out outside, skatepark, basketball, anything that doesn’t involve sitting around.
• Study! or.. attempt to! You learn something both ways and comes in more handy later in life. Trust me im not saying sit around and be a nerd. But devote at least an hour to your books, it’ll help you.
• Play MMORPG’s, ok, this may sound completely pointless, but once you do establish a fine line of control over your time, go ahead and play! Our new tech world wouldn’t be the same without geeks like us.
• Get a girlfriend! not a gf. ps: c’mon, you know the difference.
• Finally, be creative! I can’t obviously cover everything you can possibly do, but go out and do what your heart tells you to do.

So yeah guys, really. Life isn’t anything that should be given away to a company, but like my story. Something like this can compell you to learn cool things and do some awesome experiements. So thats really all i have to say, i hope you guys take this advice.

2. Free RuneScape Membership. Yes yes, in this day and age, everything is free somewhere. You can obtain free runescape memberships. But don’t expect me to point to anywhere

3. Do to others what you want done to you. When i used to play runescape, me and my friends were fooling around and cursing and whatnot. Guess what? My own friend reported me! I asked him why, he said he wants to be a player mod. Tsk tsk. Please don’t report your friends just to try and become a mod, its selfish and foolish. Plus the chances of getting PMOD are pretty much impossible now since theres no cheating anyway.

4. Moparscape Servers are generally just private runescape servers. Now go do research.

5. Feel lucky! Back when i used to play runescape, the game wasn’t nearly as secure as it is now! There were no bank pins or such protection, only pure trust.

6. RuneScape is just a game! Come on!, you don’t need to play all the time or for very long periods of time, get out, get some exercise, build your social life. Believe it or not, Real life is the harder game! RuneScape won’t go anywhere anytime soon, so just play in your spare time and you’ll enjoy the game much more.

7. There are NO Runescape cheats.. at least ones that work really well. Cheating in runescape used to be a big market but now there really isn’t any at all, so don’t bother looking up “RuneScape Cheats” on google.

Noob Sponsorship is an idea that would solve various problems but first I will explain the concept. You find yourself a noob (lvl 3) and you sponsor him. For each level he gains you pay him 100 gold pieces. Now everyones reaction to this “What’s in it for me?”. Well nothing is the answer unless it makes you feel good, if your one of those people. However ever if a player gained 50 levels that’s only 5,000. Not so bad.

This concept could solve many problems if it caught on. No longer would these inexperienced players come begging for nothing. They will get free money but need to earn it. If your still tight about this idea then think of this. Soon the player will realise 100gp doesn’t cover there needs. They won’t bother you for the money after a while. By this time they are no longer “noobs”. They have a fair knowledge of what the games about and how to play.

This is kind of like looking after the young. Until they are all grown up and ready to leave home. You can also have bunches of them on the go, kinda like your own herd of noobs or whatever It could also be argued that it’s like Star Wars. Taking on a Padawan Learner and then teaching him everything you know so that one day he can become better than you and your then his slave.

Well not quite, but if you see through the simile you will see that what I’m saying is that eventually he can teach you things later on. If your stuck on a quest you have someone you can ask, “Oh Noobieeeee…”:p

People who are above average IQ may read this and go “Nut, what a load of junk.” BUT people with higher IQ than them can see this as a financial advantage, Mwahahah no more details about this.

The Grand Exchange – Database

Yeah, we all have our complaints about the in-game trading system now, but now lets talk about the tool they recently’ released, the Grand Exchange Database. For players, this is a miracle-ish type thing, you can easily check an items value and history and would kind of resemble a RuneScape wall-street tool. So in a sense, thats great and all right? Well yeah for the players of course, but with the coming of this also created the death of another. As some of us may know, Zybez was the first RuneScape helpsite to create such a tool, and many many players used it, they worked really hard to keep it up to date, seeing as they have to gather data manually rather than have it easily accessable like Jagex, its easy to say that Zybez put alot of work into their tool. Now this Grand Exchange DB came out, and i won’t deny that its more accurate and useful but it also is another major supporter of my theory. Now onto the next piece of evidence

The Knowledge Base

This was first introduced as a replacement for the game manual but this thing is slowly evolving in my opinion to a fully blown mini help site tool. To be really picky, they have their “Quest Help” tool, which supposedly helps players get past parts of quests that they find confusing, what does this remind you of? RuneScape Help of couse! Except this is Jagex’s version with a little kick to make sure that players play their game more instead of reading a guide and just completing the quest. Then they have their game manual that pretty much tells players anything they really need to know about the game.

So what is the point of this article you may think? Well, in a sense Jagex can really never shut down all the fansites but the things they are doing are helping to drive 3rd party help into extinction, afterall, when a new player signs up, and they need help, the first place their going to probably look now is the RuneScape website, and if jagex keeps on improving, the player will have everything they need at the Runescape website. Maybe this isn’t a loss, maybe its a gain, or it could be the other way around, but it depends on how you interpret these types of events.

In a small unknown town a young computer nerd sat and waited for his teacher to arrive to class. What another kid in this young, future Runescape addict’s class said next, would be the birth of an addiction causing loss of time, life, money, and energy.

“Runescape is so cool. I reached level 15 yesterday.”

“Level 15? My mom could reach that in 5 minutes” K13, the nerd, was overhearing a conversation similar to the one above. He had no idea that the fact that he was eavesdropping on his classmates conversation, would have such a huge impact of his computer gaming life.

Him being the conversation joining person he was, asked, “What is Runescape?”

“A cool game where you fight and drink beer!”

“That game sounds…interesting, how and where do you play?” Asked young little K13.

“www.runescape.com, just sign up and start playing.”

So as most people would, he tried to play the game. He wasn’t really in to MMOs at the time, so he didn’t really get the point. At this point the game had no addicting effects on his life and later left the game at level 11.

About 6 months later it all came back to him. He was bored on a Saturday in the middle of summer and decided to revisit the game to pass the time. He started a brand new account and when he did, he was a full on addict. 10, 20, 30, then 40, he was leveling fast and working on the skills that could get his gear on a role. Getting tantrums when someone tried to make him leave the game. Questing and grinding for 10 hours, seemed like 10 minutes and he couldn’t get enough. His goal was to reach level 99 and to be able to pk in the wilderness. Unfortunately he never killed anyone in the wilderness and quit the game at level 47.

During his journey in the game, he had many hardships. At many times playing for 5,6,7 hours a day. Late into the night, and long into the day he kept on playing. He dealt with 2 Chinese black market dealers, -$40 bank accounts (that’s a lot of money for a 12 year old kid), and a lot of heartache (I will go into detailes about all of these things, all linked together in 1st person… I hope).

Chinese black market dealer 1- One day I decided to buy some Runescape gold because some person kept spamming me on Instant Messenger. I paid the money and was told to meet at the east bank in Varrock. All was well and I later sold half of the gold to my friend that also played the game.

Chinese black market dealer 2 (and the bank account thing) – This one was a little more intense. Chinese black market dealer number two was from a website called buybuy or something similar. I saw that they could off for a decent price, so as most buyers would I tried it out. I paid using PayPal, but for some reason it went through my bank account. I didn’t have enough money in my account so when it tried to make the payment my bank charged me 20 dollars (which I didn’t have). When PayPal charged my account again in an attempt to make the payment there were still (because of the negative balance). Now with an $(40.00) balance, he found out the payment didn’t go through. I demanded my gold either way and they didn’t know the payment hadn’t gone through. When they found out they were MAD. They demanded that I pay them asap or they would take action. After I did pay them, They still bugged me! so while telling them to leave me alone on IM one day and they made creepy comments (that my brother found, not me). Eventually I got the funds back from my bank and in the end, all was fine, but it was not worth all the troubles I had.

Runescape is an addicting game with dangerous qualities. As we know, Runescape can be played free of charge. Because of this it is a dwelling land for pedophiles and rapists alike. If you tell some one you are 10 (figuratively) they usually say they are 10 also. In fact, a good friend of mine got a ‘girlfriend’ on Runescape and was told he was talking to someone his own age. I talked to her on my account and she told me was divorced and had 4 kids. Although I am incredibly against these qualities of the game I will always play a little bit. I rid myself of all the addictions related to playing the game and have kept it that way for quite a while. My story might not be as intense as yours but I believe that 500+ hours I have spent on the game was time badly and well wasted. Sorry if I made a mistake in this post. It is my first one on TRB.

My friends and me were once talking about earning GP, when I started wondering if it was possible for the value of the Gold Coin to decrease like the American Dollar. The more money in the sytem, the less that currency is worth, right? After a few minutes of pondering, I realized that this was not possible because the big “J” has implemented a few factors into the game that do not allow this to be possible.

The first one is probably obvious. The players with lots of gold quit and when they do, the money pretty much leaves the system because the coins will never go to another player who might be able to use it Of course, they may give it out in the Falador Party Room, but lower-leveled players leave the game even more often than the more higher ones. The second one is the one most players might not suspect…Summoning. “What do you mean?” you might ask. Where do the Spirit Shards and Pouches come from? Players can’t make them, and the only way you can actually acquire them is to buy from NPCs. Well where do the Coins go when you buy the shards and pouches? They get destroyed. And the amount of Shards and Pouches needed to get to 99 Summoning is 120 Million gp! The amount is never achieved by most players.
